History

The development of the College English Department at Henan University has been highlighted with 6 important dates. Before June, 1981, it was a section belonging to the Department of Foreign Languages (which is now called the School of Foreign Languages), named the Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section.In June, 1981, it was separated from the Department of Foreign Languages and the earliest College English Department was founded. At that time, it   was a basic teaching unit of the mid-level institute directly under the charge of the university.

In 1991, the department was upgraded to the director level. Two years later, at the end of 1993, the department was integrated back into the School of Foreign Languages. However, in April 1999, the College English Department was separated from the School of Foreign Languages again and was upgraded to the director level with the authorization of the university. Two years later, in April 2002, with the consolidation of the three universities, the present Department was established.

Currently, the department has six divisions:Reading & Writing Division I, Reading & Writing Division II, Listening & Speaking Division I, Listening & Speaking   Division II, Continuing Education Division and the Center for English Teaching and Research.

Mission

The College English Department is devoted to excellence in English teaching, learning and research. It provides a wide range of general and academic English courses for all the non-English major students of the university. Our mission is to prepare outstanding English talents who make a difference globally, and to create an English-learning-community environment on campus through various English activities and competitions.

Focusing on the cultivation of the students’ all-round skills in English listening, speaking, reading and writing, the department keeps conducting research and reforms concerning English teaching and learning. So far it has made great achievements in the innovations of curriculum design, teaching modesand evaluation etc., especially the level-based teaching and fostering atmosphere of English culture on campus. The department plays a leading role in College English Teaching Reform in Henan Province. We also take the responsibility of the CET4 & CET6 (College English Test Band 4 & Band 6) test center in Henan Province, and the unique online CET Spoken English Test Center in Henan Province.
